In November of 2004, our founder and CEO, Greg Minow, became a complete paraplegic as a result of spinal injuries sustained during a motorcycle accident. Over the past 5 years, Greg and his wife, Alicia, decided that they would like to have children. While both Greg and Alicia were otherwise fertile – infertility treatments would make little difference, in other words – Greg’s disability presented a challenge. So let’s get down to business – how often should you inject to maximize the chances of success when trying to conceive a baby?

The Answer: It depends on who you ask. We’ve asked a number of doctors this ourselves, and guess what? Different doctors give different answers with different explanations. Some say “Inseminate every three days – don’t overdo it.” Others say “Inseminate every day – you’re trying to conceive a baby, and the ideal time for you could be any day.”

Now, we’re not doctors by any means – in other words, we can’t give you medical advice – but we can share with you what worked for us!

Life Choice: What Worked for Us While Trying to Conceive a Baby

Chart your menstrual cycle. We used the Basal Body Temperature (BBT) method (the thermometer is available here). After some quick research, we found that women tend to ovulate between days 13-15 after the beginning of their menstrual cycle. Do a little research online on how to properly carry out the BBT Charting method.

Inject near your ovulation time. Especially important for women trying to conceive a baby – you’re most fertile when you ovulate. What worked for us was inseminating once 3 days before ovulation, again the day of ovulation, and once the day after.

Relax and above all: have fun. The conclusion we came to is that injection frequency is a matter of personal preference, and of some debate between doctors. What’s most important of all, though, is that you and your partner enjoy trying to conceive a baby. Stress consumes energy – energy that your body needs to conserve for the act of conception. So take it from us – sit back, relax, and enjoy trying to conceive!

But yes, there are a few instructions to follow, aimed at maximizing your chances of conceiving through self insemination. We’ve tried to make them simple, informative, and, dare we add, enjoyable? Step 1: Keep it Clean. In the hygienic sense, we mean! With self insemination, you’re dealing with sensitive fluids and areas of the body – staying clean increases the chances of DIY insemination success. This means washing your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water before using the syringe. Oh, and our syringes are Single Use Only – so toss it when you’re done!

Step 2: Special Delivery! Self insemination relies on your fertility. In this case, as we know, every drop counts – position the syringe with the funnel end close to the penis. After ejaculation, let the fluid collect inside of the syringe body.

Step 3: Take a deep breath. Anxious? Relax – DIY insemination isn’t rocket science! We’re serious – self insemination’s easy with the Life Choice Syringe. You’re past the hardest part.

Step 4: Preparation. Insert the plunger into the body of the syringe by about a half inch – the red plug should be pointing down while you do this. Now, tip the syringe upside down, with the red plug pointing up. Next, remove the plug. (These steps put the ‘self’ in self insemination, we know.) Squeeze any remaining air out of the plunger. At this point, be careful not to push out any semen – the point is to retain as much as you can.

Step 5: Lock and Load! You should now lubricate the syringe tip with a lubricant designed for self insemination, like Pre-Seed, should you so desire.

Step 6: Special Delivery, Pt. 2. Gently slide the syringe into the vagina until reaching the baseplate – if the syringe reaches the baseplate before full insertion, don’t force it (your partner will appreciate it). Slowly squeeze the plunger to release the semen. You’ve just given your partner the best shot at natural conception that DIY insemination can offer!

Step 7: Wait just a minute… Seriously! Leave the syringe in place for 60 seconds, to avoid pulling semen out along with it.

Step 8: Breathe. You’re done – it’s out of your hands! Relax.
